New Open AI Model : cost benefit analysis : A game changer

It is widely said that a picture says a thousand words. We now live in a world where a few words can create several pictures, thanks to the AI tool Dall.E. Let us imagine a writer who has produced a screenplay about an astronaut solving problems on Mars to make it habitable for a dying earth. Given the competition and cost, his screenplay might never hit screens. How would you feel about an AI tool that can create videos for the screenplay just from text prompts? Did you say-dream come true? Well, Sam Altman is set to make it a reality. Altman’s OpenAI just announced a new tool-Sora. It can generate videos based on your text prompts.

But before we conclude, let us dig deeper to understand the potential benefits and concerns.

OpenAI’s Sora will give presence and skills to creators. You might no longer need a fancy budget orto depend on your luck in front of an agent. It would change how we express ourselves. Sora could help an educator increase the engagement of lectures. Not only are we born storytellers but also stories captivate us.  The AI tool will allow educators to curate content for a wide variety of learning styles A little bit more into the future it could enhance the accessibility of let’s say a lecture, by ‘live transcribing it into the sign-language’

Sora could be the bridge between communities and nations. Many nations have richer technology skills that enable them to tell their stories and reach a wider audience. Imagine what Sora could do for an African writer or social worker who could use it to create campaigns for an equitable society.

So clearly, Sora could be a tool with benefits. But what are the costs and risks?

Even before Sora, deepfakes have been the trouble-maker. What if a sitting President’s deep fake video asks voters not to vote? (and this has already happened). Afterall, stories captivate us. What about an ill-intentional script that aims to disturb the harmony between two long co-existing societies! Sora could be the Pandora’s box. Needless to say it will be out for a lot of jobs in the digital creation market. While the big production houses may stick to professional softwares it would only be a matter of time before AI would catch up to that level. We already are a world glued to social media and mental health problems that it creates. What would having a tool like Sora mean for teenagers who want to capture everything on their phones! Would we by this tool push them in another race of distraction? We have a lot of questions before us.

The creators hence have not released the tool for public. They want to keep the world and experts updated and seek feedback from policymakers and educators. They want to embed metadata into the content created via Sora to ensure accountability. They would frame rules to determine what content could be created from it checking for its misuse.

Without a doubt, AI is moving by leaps and bounds. How we best tailor it to maximise utility and minimise risks is for us and the future to decide upon.
